Haidong Huangshui River Basin Ecological Landscape Concept Master Plan

The project formulates an innovative direction and methodology for the ecological urban development in Haidong.

In order to build Haidong as the ‘green valley’ in Huangshui River region, the project proposes multiple strategies with the concepts of ‘green river’, ‘green mountain’ and ‘green city’. The strategy will remediate the Huangshui River’s ecological condition, enhance the urban spatial quality, and stimulate economic development.

The project has seven main challenges: regional ecological system recovery, flooding and river ecology, drought and water harvesting, soil erosion, sand sedimentation and mud slide prevention, urban bicycle route implementation as slow traffic system, and recreational uses in an urban landscape.

The project provides specific strategies for each challenge, and delivers a comprehensive vision for Haidong’s ecological safety grid. The grid consists of a river ecological belt, north-south mountain ecological buffer zone, mountain-edge ecological transition zone, and urban green infrastructure network. Additionally, the project explores practical interventions targeting each challenge and provides policy-making frameworks.
